Tokyo Olympics - Day 3 India Highlights

 

Good performances by Indian Athletes in Table Tennis, badminton and boxing, where Manika Batra, PV Sindhu and Mary Kom registered wins, Indians were outclassed everywhere.

India's table tennis star Manika Batra made a stunning comeback against world number 32 Margaryta Pesotska to reach the women's singles third round but G Sathiyan succumbed to the pressure on his Olympic debut to exit the men’s single competition on Sunday .

PV Sindhu beat the 58th ranked Israel’s Ksenia Polikarpova 21-7, 21-10 in a lop-sided opening match. The world number seven Indian will next play Hong Kong’s world number 34 Cheung Ngan Yi in the group stage.

India’s Mary Kom defeated Hernandez Garcia of Dominican Republic by a split decision to advance into the last 16 round of the women’s 51kg category. Indian boxer will be up against the third seeded Valenica Victoria of Colombia on July 29.

 

In 100m backstroke men’s too, Srihari Nataraj has been ousted in the heats with a time of 54.31. It is end of the road for Maana Patel. She finished 39th in the overall rankings with a time of 1:05.20 7.32 and has been knocked out in the heats for the Women’s 100m Backstroke semi-finals.

India boxer Manish Kaushik (63kg) on Sunday bowed out of the men’s lightweight (57-63 kg) category event after losing to Great Britain’s Luke McCormack in the round of 32 here at the Tokyo Olympics. McCormack defeated Kaushik 4-1 in the round of 32 match.

Australia dominated the game from the outset as India failed to live up to the expectations in the high-octane clash. Australia has sent a strong message to the other oppositions in the Olympics that they are here to claim the gold. IND 1-7 AUS | FULL TIME

 

Summary

Boxing legend MC Mary Kom, paddler Manika Batra and badminton star PV Sindhu advanced into the next round of their respective events after a good showing today. Indian shooters continued  to disappoint after a poor show on Day 2. Indian men’s hockey team will lock horns with Australia at 3 pm IST after winning their first match in Tokyo 2020 .

Indian swimmers also had a tough time today as Maana Patel clocked 1:05.20 in the women’s 100m backstroke heats, finishing 39th overall. She failed to qualify for the semis.

Srihari Nataraj finished 27th overall in the men’s 100m backstroke heats, and failed to qualify for the semis. He clocked 54.31s.
